Meet Spike
we found him / her / it asleep in one of the paddocks in the middle of the day
According to all the websites, he should have been hidden away, fast asleep. "There must be something wrong with it"
We took him to the local Vet, who checked him over and found a puncture wound behind his ear.
We took him home suitably drugged up, with instructions and a sachet of catfood to feed him over the next few nights.
We made a "nestbox" out of the Council's recycling box and some straw in the orchard, and, typical kids... never saw him again!
We knew we had at least one hedgehog hibernating in the orchard over the winter, and will be getting a hibernation nest box for him sorted before autumn, together with catfood at the run up to hibernation time. We just need to work out how to stop the local cats nicking the food!
