The grass where we keep our trailer got VERY boggy through the winter, so we decided that at a convenient time we would create a platform ( or island in the winter) for the trailer to stand on, and big enough so that we can back up to it and start driving off, on a dry surface.
Ally found an advert in the local paper advertising FREE to a good home.. tons of hardcore.
Last Sunday the advertiser and I spent the day wheel-barrowing about 5 tonnes of rock, sand and rubble up his garden path, up into his big pickup and my trailer, and dumping it back home next to our trailer.
This weekend we hired a Wacker Plate, laid out the big rocks/bricks and so on, into a suitable island shape. Next, I had to breakup the biggest bits using my "Big Hammer", and then covered that with smaller rubble, then sand. "Wacker Plate" got started up yesterday, and it started compacting whatever it was put over. It has done a decent job of compacting everything, except all the rainwater, which it managed to spray everywhere, but mainly over me.
Where we have run out of stones, and the island is surface mainly with sand, it was compacted but very soft, with the qualities of quick-sand when wet! It eventually dried up a bit, and the island has now become very solid, although we do have a fairly uneven surface, but no puddles lying on it.
The next job will be to buy/ aquire some small stone that we can bed into the surface to give it some structure. We will need to make the island edges into a decent slope that we can get the trailer up and down, and maybe spread a bag or two of cement over the whole thing, so it becomes even more solid.
But we can now say that we have our very own island !!
